The value of worship is like the compass that gives direction and bearing to every facet of the life of the believer. Worship has to do with heart motivations. It is far more than intent because it is both deliberate and all-encompassing. The value of worship means that there is a longing within the heart that every motive and undertaking is done with the sole purpose of glorifying the Lord.

In John 17:4, Jesus said, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. What was the work which God gave Him to do? It was that through Christ’s life of selfless submission and obedience, God the Father would have the free reign to glorify Himself. The value of worship means that an individual longs to glorify God in everything that he does. Even when it comes to thoughts and innermost convictions, the desire is that God be ‘Lord’ and has the freedom to glorify Himself in whatever way He chooses.

In order for this to happen, one’s will needs to be submitted and yielded completely to Him. This is not something that is forced upon believers, but it is a willing yielding that is born of a response to God’s unconditional love, forgiveness and acceptance. The only areas of our lives in which God can receive glory are those areas that are submitted completely to His Lordship. This perpetual journey of surrender is the essence of worship. It involves willing and reverent submission that leads to joyous release and empowerment. Through this process, God is glorified.

With this understanding it is easy to see that worship is far more than a song sung or a ritual performed. Worship is a lifestyle, born from a heart motivation that is purposefully focused on bringing glory and honour to God through willing surrender.
