Your Story Has Power To Influence & Impact Others
– by Rainer Boshoff
During my life, and especially lately, while working with the young men who are enrolled in The Men of Honour course, I have heard many stories. The stories are all different; some are sad, some happy, some inspirational, and some shocking – but all stories have one thing in common: They belong to someone, a flesh and blood human being. Here is what I learnt about stories:
1. You don’t always choose your story
We are born into certain circumstances, whether it is good or bad, and we find ourselves having to live that story without having a choice. Romans 8:28 says that all things work for the good for those who love God. You can’t choose your story, but you can choose to love God and believe His Word.
2. Your story has power to influence & impact others
Upon hearing someone else’s life story, we tend to measure our life story against that one. But then I am reminded of 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which reads, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Some stories are better, and some are worse than mine, but either way, in all circumstances, I have to be thankful.
3. You have a responsibility to tell your story
Jesus told stories to get a message across – in the end His life story became the key to our salvation. As children of God, we need to tell our stories so that we can be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. “That is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.” – Romans 1:12
Live your life to the glory of God
In the end, we will all become stories – our responsibility lies in telling of our stories. We know the truth and we have to live our lives to the Glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
