My Best Friend, The Holy Spirit Part 8
– by Dr. Siva Moodley
This is the conclusion of this series on my best friend. I recommend getting my CDs, which have much more detail. To follow on with the qualities of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit can be resisted:
“You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” – Acts 7:51.
Anyone can bring the Word
Stubborn, proud people often resist the Holy Spirit, especially when He speaks through His servants. They resist the preaching of the Word and/or the gifts of the Spirit. On a few occasions, people came to me privately after services, declaring that God was calling them to respond publicly, but they did not want others to know it was them. God will never embarrass us, but when we ignore the conviction of the Holy Spirit, we actually resist Him.
Don’t let pride hinder you
When the Holy Spirit speaks to us – whether directly or through His servants – God expects us to humble ourselves (Mark 8:38). Don’t let pride hinder you from your breakthrough. There is a world of blessing, favour, joy, and breakthrough that comes when we surrender. It is impossible to be led by the Holy Spirit when we resist Him continuously. He will never force Himself on us, but respect our decision of independence.
He can be blasphemed:
“And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” – Matt 12:31-32
The Holy Spirit is not weak
There is a special “protection” from God the Father and our Lord Jesus over the Holy Spirit. Jesus had to petition the Father to release the Holy Spirit to the earth (John 14:15-17). The Father turned on people who grieved the Holy Spirit (Is 63:10-11). The Holy Spirit is not weak, but vulnerable to extreme pain, suffering, and abuse (He can be easily grieved). He takes the love of God to a deep emotional level that in return exposes Him to abuse.
Don’t condemn what you don’t understand
The actions and manifestations of the Holy Spirit cannot be understood by our intellect. Even our past experiences fail when He is doing a new thing (Is 43:19). Never criticise or condemn what you don’t understand or intellectually does not make sense. The only time you can condemn a manifestation is when God speaks to you about it or when it directly contradicts the Word of God. The risks are high, so be absolutely sure before condemning something that you do not understand. If you condemn a manifestation that is of God, it is the Holy Spirit that is emotionally wounded by this.
He can be quenched:
“Quench not the Spirit.” – 1 Thes 5:19. While resisting refers to ignoring the Holy Spirit, quenching refers to hindering the Holy Spirit. When we put out the fire of the Holy Spirit in our lives or in others, we quench Him. The main reasons for this are either that we don’t want to die to self, or we want to control how the Kingdom of God should behave.
Does the Holy Spirit feel welcome?
So often, people will quench the Holy Spirit because they prefer to follow their programme instead. This is common in churches where everything is programme-driven with time constraints. I am often asked by people in these environments why the Holy Spirit does not turn up. Will you turn up in an environment where you are always quenched?
Friendship comes through relationship
The more we hinder the leading of the Holy Spirit, the more spiritual sensitivity we lose. The person of the Holy Spirit wants to be our best friend. Friendship can only come through a relationship. A relationship can only be established if there is regular communication. Communication is only possible if we invest into it.
