While driving to an appointment, the song “Every Breath You Take” by Police was playing on the radio. At that moment the lyrics “Every move you make, every vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I’ll be watching you” struck a chord in my heart, as I realised how applicable those words are to our children, spouses, and those we deal with on a daily basis. It is so easy to fake a smile, please the ear, and pretend to be the best human out there.
But it is only a matter of time before the crust of fakeness crumbles and the truth of Luke 6:24 comes into play: “For it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.” I am also guilty of succumbing to the stresses that come hand-in-hand with living ‘la vida loca’ and that can cause the sinful nature to which we are born (Psalm 51:5) to stick out it’s ugly neck. As men, it is imperative that we aim daily to model the life, love, and principles of God who sent Jesus so that we can have an example of how it is done. We are the mirror that our children, spouses, and colleagues see and we have the Word of a Gracious God to help and guide us. Make use of it, because every breath you take – they’ll be watching you.
