I have been working as the subscriptions manager at JOY! Magazine for the last year. What I enjoy most about working for JOY! is being in contact with our readers. I get to hear how much our readers enjoy, appreciate, and share our magazine. It makes me happy to hear how it touches everyone’s heart and to be excited with them about the next issue.
A phone call with a subscriber
Not too long ago, one such reader, Mrs C*, called me after I sent her a WhatsApp message, in which I reminded her to renew her subscription (which was soon coming to an end). Excitedly, I asked the lady on the other end of the line how she was doing, “It is going well and also not so well. Well when I can sit quietly and enjoy a cup of tea with my magazine in hand, but not so well because unfortunately, I will not be able to do it any longer.”
I could hear the disappointment in her voice as she continued to tell me about how, due to her retirement and many other factors, she could no longer afford to renew her subscription. “This is the only magazine I read. I love it so much and cherish every issue. I’m almost a little too selfish to share it after, so precious it is to me.”
Unfortunately, this is a message that we so often hear, as many of our readers are entering their retirement and the South African pension is simply not enough to cover anything more than the basic essentials. We have many readers who would love to subscribe to our magazine, but are unfortunately not able to do so.
It is because of God’s love for us that we are worthy to receive His blessings.
An answer to prayer
But then, only a little while later in November 2021, an online follower subscribed to our magazine and made payment for it through our website. Unfortunately, I had to inform her that we do not send our physical magazines abroad and asked her if she wanted a refund. This generous lady suggested that we should rather keep the subscription money and donate it to someone in South Africa who would like a subscription.
Thankfully, I was able to tell Mrs C that her subscription, which she valued so much, had already been paid for another year. “Am I worthy?” asked Mrs C on the other end of the line. I could hear the tears levelling as she shared how she uses the magazine in their Bible study and places the old issues in the old age home’s foyer for others to read.
Worthy of God’s blessings
Am I worthy? This question stayed with me after I greeted a very grateful Mrs C. How many times do we wonder if we are worthy to receive God’s blessings? Thanks to His sacrifice on the Cross, Christ came to offer us dignity. It is because of His love for us that we are worthy to receive His blessings.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” – James 1:17
