During a recent church service our pastor asked, “Would you be willing to let the person next to you quickly scan through your phone’s search history?” Why did he use this as an example? Because our search history reveals much more about us than we would like – and that is not necessarily because it would reveal inappropriate websites. When we are busy on the internet, who we truly are is revealed – what is really important to us; as well as what our fears, preferences, and concerns are.

Google is our doctor, advisor, and psychologist
Here we ask the questions we are too shy to ask out loud, or are curious about. “What are the symptoms of …?”, “How do you remove rust stains from a toilet bowl?” Google is our doctor, psychologist, expert advisor, and intimate friend who knows everything about us there is to know. Google has a more accurate picture of us than our friends, family, and colleagues do, as we often just reveal certain aspects of ourselves. Google knows which movies we really like, or if we like to play games online, or what type of restaurants we prefer. Google knows who we really are – not who we say we are. We may portray a certain image to others, but through the window of our phone, Google peeks into our soul. We think we our secrets are ours, but for Google nothing is hidden – and even less so for God.

Google has a more accurate picture of us than our friends, family, and colleagues do.

Hiding from God
We think that we can pull the wool over God’s eyes; hide from Him and conceal our fears, sins, and guilt. This has been man’s problem from the beginning. “Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” – Genesis 3:8-10. We even lie to ourselves about certain aspects of our lives. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” – Jeremiah 17:9

God knows us through and through
Even though Google thinks it knows us better than anyone else – we are known by God in a way that Google cannot even dream of! “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” – Jeremiah 1:5. Psalm 139:2,4 says: “You understand my thought afar off … For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” The days of our lives were written down by God before we were even born! He knows us through and through and even discerns the intentions of the heart. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” – Hebrews 4:12-13

Search me, oh God
Jesus knows everything about us – absolutely everything – and still He wants to “know” us. All we can do, is to pray: “Search me, O God, and know my heart … And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” – Psalm 139:23,24. Let Him know your heart and allow Him to reveal your heart to you – He knows you far better than Google does.
