Understanding Who Abba Is
– by Gebhardt Berndt
Jesus taught His disciples to pray by saying “Father, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come.” Father – the name of relationship, closeness, and intimacy. In human beings, love is a quality, a high-prized virtue; but in God, love is His identity. If He is Abba and we belong to Him, we must quit our scorekeeping moral code that wants to somehow earn our way into heaven. We must understand that heaven is home, not because we are good, but because He is good. Scripture declares “Cease striving and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10. If we indomitably strive, our prayer lives will be separated with a merit system (thinking He must answer because were good). No, He answers because He is Abba. This simple truth must stand strong in your heart, “I am His beloved and His desire is for me” – Songs of Solomon 7:10.
Abba is love, and He loves me the same way He loves Jesus. If I understand that He is Abba, I can let Him have His glory. If not, I will never see His Name “hallowed” (revered, honoured, glorified). This is the fundamental truth to see your prayer life become powerful. The Father’s love has no credentials on it, you don’t need to be a saint or a priest to receive it. His love is for all – His love does not discriminate, holds no record of wrongs, keeps not score of sin, but just gives. Abba’s love breaks the hardest of hearts, moulds the toughest of clay. Abba’s love –many do not understand it. You are the object of His love. Now pray like one that whispers to His beloved Abba, Papa, Father! He is ready to hear! My prayer is that you will be unravelled by His ‘scandalous’ love as you embrace a new dynamic prayer life!
