Biblical Requirements For Healing – Part 3
– by Siva Moodley
God never forces Himself, His values, or even healing upon us. In Deuteronomy 28, God presents the case of obeying Him vs the option of disobedience. Then He encourages us to “choose life” by obeying Him (Deut 30:19). God never forces His blessing, even healing, on anyone. We always have a choice to allow God to heal us or not.
Have you given God permission?
In the Lord’s prayer (Matt 6:9-13), Jesus taught His disciples this very important principle. He starts off by addressing the prayer to “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name.” Then immediately after that He says we need to pray, “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”. Matt 6:10 is probably one of the most important parts of the Lord’s prayer. Jesus says we need to give Heaven permission to intervene in the earthly affairs of our lives. God wants to heal us (He has already done it on the Cross), however He must be given permission to manifest the healing in our bodies. This is why the first thing we do after addressing the prayer to God is to give Him permission to fulfil all the other parts of our prayer request.
God does not break His covenant
People ask me why God allows millions to die in natural disasters, like tsunamis, floods, fires, or even loved ones in accidents. Sometimes people blame God for these tragedies. The answer is that God was never allowed to save them. We have been given dominion, covenant rights over the earth (Gen 1). God honours these rights. For Heaven to interfere in our lives and the earth, Heaven must be given permission. The book of James says, “You have not because you ask not” – James 4:2. These words are spoken to the Christian church, not to the unbeliever. Another way to explain this Scripture is God saying “I cannot bless you, I cannot heal you unless you give me permission through prayer”. Yes, God knows you are in pain, He sees your suffering, but He needs you to allow Him to heal you, even though it is a covenant right available to you. If God heals you without you asking Him, He violates your rights and becomes a covenant breaking God (which He is not).
If you want healing, ask for it
Nowhere in Scripture did Jesus ever heal anyone without them asking for it. In the story of the two blind men we see this again, “And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, what will ye that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.” – Matthew 20:30-34. Jesus could see that the men were blind and needed healing, yet He could not heal them until they made the official request.
What about the future?
What about future events, even possible tragedies that we are ignorant of? How does God get permission to save people or change the outcome since He must be given permission to do this? God uses a process called intercession, “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” – Rom 8:26-27.
Right now, let’s ask God to heal us
He is ever willing to do so. Pray this Prayer with me: Dear Heavenly Father, I come before Your Throne in Jesus’ Name. I ask that you heal me now in Jesus’ Name of . . . (indicate all your needs). Thank you, Lord. Amen.
