Dear prayer partners
The African National Congress’s (ANC’s) top leadership has reportedly decided to recall South African president Jacob Zuma as head of state‚ with no deal, but an ultimatum. The decision came after a marathon 13-hour deliberation. On Tuesday (13 February) it was said that Mr Zuma had a day to resign from office in compliance with the decision taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC). If he refuses‚ he could face a recall or a motion of no confidence against him in Parliament. Mr Zuma has not said in public whether he will step down voluntarily. Mr Zuma himself engineered the ouster of former president Thabo Mbeki in 2008 shortly after taking the helm of the ANC.
The ANC’s new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, has placed his focus on rooting out corruption and revitalising economic growth since winning the ANC leadership race in December last year. Since Mr Ramaphosa’s election as ANC party leader, Mr Zuma has faced mounting calls from his party to end his scandal-marred presidency, scheduled to run out in mid-2019.
Please join with us in praying for South Africa during this time of tremendous uncertainty.
