I have dealt with many situations involving adultery over the years. Lighting the fire of adultery is devastating to any marriage, regardless of the circumstances. Unfortunately, adultery is all too common.
Nobody wakes up one day and suddenly decides to begin an extramarital affair. The fire of lust begins in the heart and mind. By the time a person physically commits adultery, he or she has been feeding the small fire for quite some time in progressively more intense mental, and emotional, affairs.
Divorce is not God’s Will
When your marriage is passing through the test of adultery, it could simply be God removing every dross that it might have gathered over time, due to neglect or carelessness, and refining and purifying your marriage. While the Bible says you can divorce your spouse if he or she commits adultery, that does not mean it is God’s perfect will. God can miraculously change anyone. You should always pursue God’s direction prayerfully and with the input of wise counsel.
God’s purifying fire
When you pursue God’s purifying and refining fire, it will make your marriage better than it was, “so that the trail of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perished, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” – 1 Peter 1:7.
God can bring restoration
God’s holiness is the reason He manifests as a consuming fire – it burns up anything unholy. He consumes all ungodliness and wickedness in your marriage and family. When you ask for God’s fire, He becomes a hedge of protection around your family, protecting and defending your marriage from the enemy. “For I, said the Lord, will be unto her (your family) a wall of fire around about, and will be the glory in the midst of her (your home).” – Zechariah 2:5.
God’s light in the darkness
God’s Fire produces flame (light) in darkness. “And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light to go by day and night” – Exodus 13:21.
Keep on lighting God’s fire
The fire of God will empower you and your spouse, and consequently your marriage, to be a witness for Him. Your marriage will become a Godly marriage, which will be able to withstand, or overcome, the hurt of adultery.
I trust that you have already begun praying in your heart as you read, that God’s fire will never depart from your marriage. Keep on lighting the right fire in your marriage. Don’t lose hope – God can restore even the most broken circumstances.
