In John 3, Jesus explains to a Pharisee named Nicodemus what it means to be born again. Nicodemus begins their conversation by saying: “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him” (verse 2). God is with him. This is a powerful statement. Even though nobody besides Jesus had yet been baptised with the Spirit, Nicodemus knew that flesh and blood alone could never be responsible for so many dramatically transformed lives and mighty miracles.
What Jesus did was the result of man and God working together. In this case, the Son of God and the Spirit of God. In our case, the child of God and that same splendid Spirit. In verse 11, Jesus affirms the suspicion of Nicodemus: “Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not received Our witness.” Note the words: We speak; We know; We have seen; Our witness. Once we have been filled with the Spirit, witnessing alone is an impossibility. Every moment of witness is backed by God, infused with God, driven by God. His heart, His power. Our words, our touch. Such make for an unstoppable team!
