How To Lead A Child To The Lord: A Step-By-Step Guide

— by Louis Van Tonder

A step-by-step guide from our child-evangelism team

God wants to forgive your sins, and make you His child. God says to you in the Bible, John 1:12, “Yet to all” means to anyone, to you or me, “Who received Him” is to invite Jesus – to tell God that you want to take Jesus as your Saviour from sin, “To those who believed in His Name” means anyone who believes that the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, paid with His Blood for their sins. If you receive Jesus and believe in Him, God promises something wonderful. What does He promise? in John 1:12, He says, “To them He gave the right” – If you invite Jesus into your life, God will give you a special chance. “To become children of God” – God will make you His child, His friend, clean your sins, and let you live with Him in Heaven someday.

Explaining salvation to a child
To become a child and friend of God, you must admit that you have sinned, tell God you believe that Jesus paid with His Blood on the Cross to clean you from your sins, that Jesus took the punishment for your sin and that He came alive again. You have to decide for yourself. Would you like to receive the Lord Jesus right now? Do you you want to become a child of God, be forgiven of your sins, and live with Him forever?
Let me show you how to invite Jesus into your life as your Saviour. Do you remember what it is that separates you from God? Yes, the wrong things that we do. We called it “sin”. What did Jesus do so you can have your sins forgiven? He shed His Blood to clean you from your sins. How can you become a child of God? All you need to do is confess your sins, believe with all your heart that Jesus paid for your sins when He died on the Cross and then invite Jesus into your life!

Encourage the child to pray audibly (if ready)
You can tell God that you want to be His child by talking to Him, maybe you can say something like this “Dear God, thank You that You love me. I know I’m a sinner. I’ve done wrong things. Today I learned that the Blood of Jesus can clean me from my sins, I believe that Jesus took the punishment for my sins on the Cross. Right now, Jesus I choose you, come into my life and be my Saviour and friend. Amen!” Can you remember the promise God gave in John 1:12? So what has the Lord just done for you? Yes! He has made you His child if you truly believed in Jesus today.” When you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him, you become a friend of God. This is a wonderful promise God gives to you and no one can take it away.
There is another promise in Hebrews 13:5 that says: “I will never leave you.” As from today God will never leave you. The next verse Hebrews 13:6 says, “The Lord is my helper…” Remember this: “The…Lord…is…your…helper” Even though you can’t see Him, from now He will always be with you to help you.
Let us thank God because you are His child now. Talk with me to God. “Dear God, Thank You that both of us can be your child. Help us to learn lots more about You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Let the child learn more about God
Once you explained the message of salvation to a child, you will need to follow it up with teaching on assurance of faith based on the condition/promise verse in the Bible. Also show them from the Word how they can grow and learn more about God. You can learn more about how to do this through our ministry, Child Evangelism Fellowship SA.

When you become God’s child, He wants you to get to know Him better. Here are some truths on how you can grow closer to God:

  1. Read and obey the Bible, God’s Word, the Book He has given us.
  2. Pray (talk) to God every day. You can talk to Him any time and any place. You can thank Him for things, ask Him for things you need, praise Him for who He is, or just talk about anything.
  3. Tell others about God. Tell your friends what Jesus just did for you.
  4. Confess your sin. The Bible says, in 1 John 1:9, “If we” – You and I, “Confess our sins” meaning you tell God what you did wrong, “He is faithful and just” – God is always fair. When you confess, He promises “and will forgive us our sin…” He will forgive you.
  5. Go to Christ-centered, Bible believing church and Sunday school. You can learn more about God by going to church or Sunday school each week.
